ACTIVITIES Cachets - Kingdom of Callaway Compromise The exact details of the
Callaway Compromise are lost to history. What is known is that during the
Civil War, Union General John Henderson assembled his troops in nearby
Montgomery County, and rumors grew that Henderson planned to invade Callaway
County. Jefferson Jones (called Colonel, but with no military affiliation)
assembled a group of "rebels" to prevent the supposed invasion. The
leaders of the two groups sent envoys to their opponents, ostensibly to
determine an outcome if a conflict were to occur. "Colonel" Jones
then sent an envoy to General Henderson offering to disband his group in
exchange for Henderson's word that Henderson would not invade Callaway
County. The proposed terms were agreed upon, and legend suggests that General
Henderson negotiated as if Callaway were a sovereign nation rather than a
county. There is no surviving written account of these terms, but legend
suggests this was the beginning of the Kingdom of Callaway, and the title
"Kingdom of Callaway" was attributed to Jefferson Jones. Other
historians suggest that the first written mention of the Kingdom of Callaway
was attributed to John Sampson, later elected as a County Representative. The Kingdom Philatelic
Association devised a cachet for the 150th anniversary of the Kingdom of
Callaway Compromise, issued 27 October 2011.
