According
to "Rural Schools, Where Have They Gone, Randolph County, Missouri"
by Linda Bondy, the first school, a log cabin was constructed on the Lay
property in 1836, one mile north of Clifton Hill. One of the older residents of
Randolph County remembered this area as being
referred to as "Possum Hollar"
1889
This
picture shows the school building located in Possum Hollar, the students, and
the instructor (F.M. Stamper), circa 1889.

1910
This
picture, apparently of the class of 1910, in front of the school building, was
taken from a picture postcard. Randolph County documents imply that this
building was erected in 1900, replacing the rural school located in Possum
Hollar. HELP! CAN ANYONE IDENTIFY ANY OF THE PICTURED INDIVIDUALS?

As
this picture is from a newspaper clipping, colorization was impossible. Does
anyone have this original picture? |
