* SSB (superceded by) – the carburetor in the
second column can be used for the carburetor in the first column.
** CFM, with the exception of 3636S, is
approximate. All Pontiac AFB carburetors, with the exception of the SD units,
were built on a 610 CFM frame. The later units, noted as 575 CFM, can be
converted to the full 610 CFM by replacing the hot idle compensator with the
earlier hot idle compensator (Carter 169-43S); or by removing the hot idle
compensator and plugging the passage (not recommended for street driven
vehicles with auto transmission). The early Super Duty units were built by
modifying a Chevrolet 625 CFM platform. Later Super Duty units were built by
modifying a Chrysler platform.
Issues with using aftermarket AFB’s on
Pontiacs.
Carter
produced four separate groups of aftermarket AFB’s, that may be of interest to
Pontiac enthusiasts.
The
first group consists of 4758s (500 CFM manual choke); 4759s (625 CFM manual
choke); 4760s (750 CFM manual choke); 4761s (500 CFM chokeless); and 4762 (750
CFM chokeless). These carburetors are the original “Competition Series” units,
and were basically designed form racing; or very high performance street use on
non-smog-emission vehicles. This group of AFB’s were released in 1969.
The
second group all have electric chokes and consist of 9400s (400 CFM Chevrolet
linkage); 9500s (500 CFM Chevrolet linkage); 9501s (500 CFM Chrysler linkage);
9625s (625 CFM Chevrolet linkage); 9626s (625 CFM Chrysler linkage); and 9627s
(625 Ford linkage – with kickdown lever). This group of AFB’s were released in
1972.
The
third group is basically a remake of the second group by adding a plugable EGR
port and bowl vent (for emissions) and renumbering the carburetor by adding 10
to the number. The 9400s became the 9410s. Similiarly; 9500s became 9510s,
9501s became 9511s, 9625s became 9635s, 9626s became 9636s, and 9627s became
9637s. This group of carburetors was released in 1982.
The
three groups above utilized pressure casting dies to cast the bodies. The
fourth group came later and utilized vacuum casting to cast the bodies. These
will not be discussed.
Issues
in installing one of these carburetors on a Pontiac include: large air cleaner
opening (5 1/8 vs 4 ¾ inches); front fuel inlet (same as SD carbs, but
different from normal Pontiac carbs); aggressive secondary airvalve (angle of
plates much larger than used by Pontiac) creating secondary bog; metering rod
profile is much different than Pontiac profile – too much difference between
high vacuum and low vacuum steps.
