am often asked "what is the best carburetor for my engine?". To
this question, there is NO absolute answer. The state of tune of the engine,
the mass of the body in which the engine is placed, the application (driving
habits) of the driver, and the skill of the tuner all come into play. Carter
Carburetor Company offered a number of "performance" aftermarket
4-barrel carburetors, and I happen to like most Carter carburetors. As I have
a wealth of original Carter data, I have gleaned data from a number of
original sources, and placed it in a table reproduced below. These
recommendations were suggested by automotive engineers whose specialty was
carburetors. I like to think engineers have a reason for their
recommendations. Please
remember when referring to the table that these recommendations were made
some 50~60 years ago. They were generally expecting the enthusiast would use
the stock 4-barrel manifold (if available) or an aftermarket intake manifold
of the same type as the carburetor (no engineer EVER installed a square-bore
carburetor on a spread-bore manifold with an adapter, or vice versa).
Manifolds were probably all of the plenum type (no IR manifolds, which
require significantly different recommendations). The
numbers in the table are the Carter identification number for the suggested
carburetor. Another table showing CFM ratings follows the applications table.
Note that CFM ratings are given as a 3-part rating: primary, secondary, and
total. All of these carburetors are an "on-demand" secondary. They
should not be confused with vacuum secondary carbs. Carter did make a few
vacuum secondary carburetors for both FoMoCo and Chrysler in the late-1950's,
but these were extremely trouble-prone, and Carter discontinued them in favor
of the on-demand secondary. Company Engine CID
