Audio/Video Training materials and their preservation The information presented in this article is compiled from the author’s collection. I am unaware of any factory literature which lists all of the titles available. Producing such an index is part of the motivation for the article. A website with current lists of known titles is listed at the end of the article. Feel free to contact me with either additions or corrections. Pontiac used a number of different types of media for training through the years. Training loosely refers to (a) training the sales personnel on how to sell the new cars; (b) training the service personnel on servicing various components of the cars; and (c) “training” the potential buyer on why he/she should purchase a new Pontiac rather than an XYZ Whizbang. The types of media discussed in this article will be (a) the 35mm filmstrip with, when present, the accompanying 33 RPM record; (b) the Super 8 film cartridge, (c) the laser disk; and (d) the TechTrack cassette. Other formats will be mentioned. The 35mm
filmstrip
The 35mm filmstrip was produced for Pontiac, and other GM divisions by the Jam Handy Corporation. I cannot state positively when Pontiac started to use this format, but the earliest one in my library is 1929. I have seen filmstrips for other GM divisions which are earlier. Jam Handy would produce from 1 to about 24 of these filmstrips each year up to 1939. The war intervened, and production of the filmstrips apparently ceased until 1955. The 1955 and newer filmstrips came with an accompanying 33 RPM record which narrated the filmstrip. While the number varied from year to year, Jam Handy produced approximately 13 of these filmstrips in the years 1955 through 1972. The following is a link to a filmstrip/record combination which has been digitized : 1955 Pontiac movie The Super 8 film
cartridge
The Super 8 film cartridge superceded the filmstrip/record combination. GM offered a “mini-theater” to GM dealers with a special projector to play the Super 8 cartridge. The projector sat in an enclosure with its own screen and speaker system. These were placed in the dealership showrooms, and tapes were available on each of the car models. These tapes ran an average of 5 minutes and were shown directly to a new-car prospect. The Super 8 film cartridge is basically a roll of Super 8 film enclassed in a special self-threading cartridge that was supposed to be more user friendly than regular roll film. But problems arose. GM, in a proprietary move, used an optical soundtrack instead of the more conventional magnetic soundtrack. The optical soundtrack required the special projector available only from GM with an extra bulb to “read” the optical soundtrack. This extra bulb produced extra heat, which tended to distort the plastic drive gears, thus killing the projector. A couple of years normally was a long life for the projectors. Since these were proprietary, the dealer could get them serviced (at great cost) only through GM’s franchised service. I bought many of these things in the 1980’s directly from dealers. I cannot recall a single dealer that had anything good to say about this system. I finally found a gentleman who had bought the remains of the service parts and had one of the projectors restored so I can play the movies. Should any of you have a working projector, ALWAYS direct a strong external fan (such as a window fan) on the projector when it is turned on to extend its life. Super 8 film cartridges were used beginning with the 1972 year, and continued through about 1982. The laser disk
The laser disk superceded the Super 8 film cartridge beginning about 1980. GM laser disks may be played successfully on a retail consumer laser disk player. Of course, GM offered their own disk player which came with a remote and the disk could be accessed by track, with fast forward, and backup capability. Again, a very unreliable and expensive to repair item. And again, no GM dealer with which I spoke had any nice things to say about the laser disk program. As my interest in Pontiac waned after the demise of the Pontiac engine, I cannot say how long the laser disk program lasted. I have disks from 1980 through 1985. The TechTrack
Cassette
The TechTrack cassette system was provided to Pontiac by Bell & Howell. The Bell & Howell name was Filmosound. At least 3 different Filmosound projectors were available: models 755; 756; and 757. The cassette was a molded plastic cartridge containing a 35mm filmstrip, with an attached audio cassette. The cassette may be removed from the cartridge, and played on a normal cassette player. The 35mm filmstrip may be removed from the cartridge, and viewed by use of a 35mm filmstrip projector. The first of these cartridges in my library is 1973, and the last is 1986. Sometime in the mid-1980’s, TechTrack became available on both Beta and VHS tapes. Other formats
Pontiac also used other types of media, to include: 16mm movies; Beta tapes, VHS tapes, and CD/DVD’s, and even a form of View-master. Preservation
The real motivation behind this article is the preservation of these
materials. Recently, retail consumer filmstrip scanners have become available,
and I began a project to digitize my library of Pontiac filmstrips. While
delighted to find that the older black and white filmstrips (1929~1954) are
in excellent condition; I was horrified to find that the newer color
filmstrips (about 1955 and newer) were deteriorating (the color is turning
red). Thus we have accelerated the process of digitizing these films. While
this project is on-going, I .am also looking at commercial conversion of some
of the other formats. If you are a collector of any of this material, I urge
you to consider conversion NOW! I will be glad to discuss the methodology we
are using, and in general, compare notes on conversion. You may contact me by
telephone at 573-392-7378 (9-4 Mon-Wed central time). Year Issue Description Pontiac Power Wild Footage
