HISTORY
The earliest reference
in my possession for Carter carburetor special tools is 1932. This is not the
first, as this form states that it supersedes a previous form. Most of the
tools in this group carried 5-digit part numbers, with a few using a prefix
of T52; but some of the tools (specifically, the tool box and various float
gauges) carried no part number period. The box was sold only when the
customer purchased a complete set of tools. The float gauges were sold as a
part of a 10 piece gauge set. Carter did have a footnote that the various
float gauges could be special-ordered individual, and the customer was to
order by size.
In January 1936,
several of the original tools were modified to cover additional applications,
and a letter appended to the right of the 5-digit part number designating a
revised tool.
At some point between
January 1936 and June 1938, Carter revised the numbering system for all
tools. Since the mid-1920's, Carter had used a prefix/suffix numbering system
for parts, where the prefix referenced the type of part (20 indicated a round
washer, 25 indicated a fuel valve, etc.). Carter now issued the prefix 109
for tools, but added the letter "T" to the left of the 109; thus
the tool prefix became a T109. The few T52 numbers were left unchanged. All
of the original tools were retained, but new production of these tools
carried the T109 prefix and a sequential number, rather than the old 5 digit
number
GENERAL
The primary focus of
this page is to offer Carter tools for sale, but the secondary focus is to
offer information about Carter tools to our customers. There are a number of
tools pictured which have no prices, and a very few tools which have a
description, but no picture or price. The tools with prices are for sale. We
do not currently have the tools with/without pictures, and no prices. ALL
of the tools pictured on this page, and for sale by us are genuine, original
tools, made in the USA and originally sold by the Carter Carburetor Company.
We do not offer modern reproductions of these tools.
MANY carburetor special tools can be replaced by
items that most mechanics will have in their shop. For example, float level
gauges may normally be replaced by drill bits for most one and two barrel
carburetors. Many of the early four barrel floats must be adjusted for side
play as well as height. The special tools are quite useful for these. Special
straight-shank screwdrivers can be made from regular screwdrivers by grinding
off the wedge. The tools presented here are for the professional, or for the
collector who just has to have everything. These are original tools, most
used, but in like-new condition. Metering rod gauges will be sold only
with the purchase of a rebuilding kit. Other tools may be ordered ala
carte. Order by tool part number.
While Carter did offer these tools ala carte,
Carter also offered comprehensive tool kits. These were available as follows:
(1) Master Technician Tool Kit (containing most, but not all, currently
available tools for all makes of vehicles), (2) Junior Technician Tool Kit
(containing fewer tools than the Master Kit, but still the tools generally
needed for all makes of vehicles), (3) Dealer Tool Kits for various makes of
vehicles (contained most of the available tools for a specific make of
vehicle, ie Chevrolet, Pontiac, Packard, etc.). A very few of the most
expensive special tools were not included in any of the tool kits, but sold
ala carte. We can generally furnish any of the Master, Junior, or Dealer
kits, with the total price substantially discounted from buying all of the
individual tools in the kit.
COMPREHENSIVE TOOL KITS
There were several versions of the later Master
Technician, Junior Technician, and Dealer tool kits from 1938 to 1957, with
tools being added as needed; but no tools being removed. When selling these
kits, we use the newest bill-of-materials for the kits. Call for availability
and prices on these kits.
