Marvel Casting numbers
In an effort to aid our customers in the identification
of Marvel carburetors, we have gone through a number of Marvel catalogues,
and listed the large raised casting number along with which carburetors
used this particular casting. Please note that for the most part, the
casting number alone is insufficient to positively identify a Marvel
carburetor, as most of the throttle castings (containing the casting
number) were used with a variety of bowls, etc., to produce different
carburetors. While the casting numbers are large and easy to find, the more
useful part numbers (if present) are STAMPED (recessed, not raised) in
numbers the height of which is approximately the width of the lead in a
number 2 lead pencil!!! Note that most of the casting numbers are LESS than
500; while most of the identification numbers are GREATER than 500.
Many of the early (pre-1916) solid brass carburetors do
NOT have any useful numbers. They may only be identified by disassembly,
and comparison of each part to the original prints (read expensive).
And even if it is possible to completely identify a
Marvel carburetor as to identification number, this information is
sometimes insufficient to determine the correct repair kit. Why? Because
Marvel often used TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF FUEL VALVES IN THE SAME
CARBURETOR!
To add to the confusion, Marvel often assigned two
different identification numbers to THE SAME CARBURETOR. One number would
be for a carburetor and heat riser combination (as would come on a
vehicle); the other would be the number for a carburetor without a heat
riser (as possibly sold as an over the counter replacement from the car
dealership). EITHER could be stamped on the carburetor!
As to the fuel valves, Marvel used two entirely
different fuel valves (a.k.a. needle and seat assembly) in mostly 1929,
1930, and 1931 single barrel updraft carburetors (mostly Hudson and Essex,
but some others as well). We refer to the two different styles as: (1) Ball
& Socket, and (2) Horseshoe and collar. The Ball & Socket unit has
a threaded plug at the top of the plunger which is inserted through a
threaded hole in the float arm, and screwed into the arm (it will remain
attached to the float if the float is removed from the carburetor). The
Horseshoe and Collar unit has a float arm with an end that resembles a
horseshoe (there are two prongs that stick out the end). The plunger has a
collar on the top. The collar resembles the capital letter “H” which is
laid over on its side. The prongs of the float arm stick into the sides of
the collar. This plunger is not firmly attached to the float arm, and will
fall off if the float is removed from the carburetor. There seems to be NO
explanation as to why both were used, or when. Two sequentially
serial-number carburetors could have both styles.
Further, most Marvel carbs require different kits (there are more than 600
different gaskets, and even at least 19 different air valve springs). All
kits for Marvel are custom made to order, and NOT returnable.
We
do make kits for virtually ALL Marvel carburetors. In general, rebuilding
kits will contain: all large gaskets, all fiber washers, a new fuel valve,
a new float pontoon (you reuse your old float arm), a new air valve spring,
and most or all of the body and shaft screws (Marvel used some unusual
thread sizes!).
For
all of the above reasons, we suggest when you require a carburetor
rebuilding kit for a Marvel carburetor; have the carburetor in hand and
CALL!
